Pumpkins are my favourite thing to make at the minute. You can make them any size or any colour, and you can even add silly little faces to them. I picked up some orange gingham, burnt-orange corduroy and felt for the stalks, then sat my butt down at the kitchen table and sewed my little heart out.
1. Many, many, MANY ovals. For the small pumpkins you need five pieces per pumpkin. The mixed-fabric ones need an even number of six, and the larger ones need seven. I've only recently discovered the joys of these rotary cutters. They save a lot of time, but cost the price of my fingertips.2. Then comes the sewing. My favourite but most confusing part. Sew the edges with the face of the fabric on the inside to hide the seams. I probably shouldn't admit how many times I've done one section the wrong way round, but we live, learn and lose our minds, right?3. STUFFING TIME, BABY! Pack that little pumpkin to the brim. We love a chunky little pumpkin, so don't be stingy with the stuffing. When you think she's full, she needs another handful! This is the point where it starts to come together and is no longer just a pile of fabric and frustration.4. Time for the stalk. Felt is my absolute favourite material to work with. It may not technically be the best choice, but gosh darn it, these are my pumpkins and I'll use felt if I want to! Cut out a little tube shape and two splash shapes. The tube and one splash go on top, with a smaller splash on the pumpkin butt. You can't let her show off those little butt seams, now can you?5. Repeat a mere eight million times. Keep going until it's 1am and so dark that your photos look crap.VOILÀ! One box o' pumpkins.
